Assess, Evaluate, Recommend

How does it work?

  • 1

    Intro. Meeting

We learn about the business, the product, the team, and any immediate technical challenges which may be relevant. We provide a brief questionnaire to help us build a better profile of the business.

  • 2

    Assess

We spend time assessing your nominated cloud account and operations. This can take anywhere from 1-2 days to perform a top to bottom assessment while considering the AWS Well-Architected pillars but also the businesses current profile.

  • 3

    Evaluate

We evaluate the reported status and highlight areas for improvements. We attribute a weighted score to each area to build a better picture of where the high-value recommendations exist or even potential risks are present.

  • 4

    Recommend

We propose recommendations and remediation steps to improve the state of your overall cloud account and operations. Our recommendations may save on running costs, mitigate potential security risks, or improve your overall operational performance.

FAQ

What is Single-Account topology?

Each tier of service offering covers either single or multi AWS account topologies. In the case of single, it means we assess a single AWS account ONLY. Maintaining a single account is typical for startups and smaller teams getting started on AWS. Multi-account means more than one account. This is typical for more mature setups.

How many accounts does Multi-Account Topology cover?

Multi-account topology in the case AER premium means 1-5 accounts. Please get in touch to find out more about AER Premium pricing.

What does a Cloud Assessment involve?

We provide your team instructions to create an IAM user called auditor in the cloud accounts being assessed. This user has read-only permissions only. Once this is in place the assessment can begin. The assessment entails a detailed analysis of your cloud resources and overall infrastructure. We use the Well-Architected Framework as a guide to assess the overall standing of your Cloud Infrastructure.

Whats included in the Evaluation Report?

The evaluation simply captures how and why you are using specific resources and infrastructure. This phase of the process may reference both the positive and negative aspects of your setup. All of this is included in the final overall report.

Can you give me an example of a Recommendation?

We interpret our evaluation report in order to make recommendations so you can improve, secure, and enhance your overall cloud platform in terms of cost, efficiency, and so on.
A quick example of a recommendation could be:
Consider upgrading to the T3 series to save on costs (reduced cost in comparison to the legacy T2 series) whilst at the same time offering key performance advantages.

Each tier of service offering covers either single or multi AWS account topologies. In the case of single, it means we work with a single AWS account ONLY. Maintaining a single account is typical for startups and smaller teams getting started on AWS. Multi-account means more than one account. This is typical for more mature setups. We recommend a Multi-Account set up to ensure good segregation of duties between non-production and production workloads and so on.

How many accounts does Multi-Account Topology cover?

Multi-account topology means at least two accounts. Typically we recommend as good practice at least 3 accounts, one for Operational concerns, and a pair for Non-Production and Production workloads.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Architecture designed or enhanced cover?

We bundle our Architectonics service offering with DevOps essentials. Essentially this means we discover your detailed requirements, design your architecture, forecast the costs of your overall architecture, and present back to your team for approval.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does a Cost Forecast include?

We forecast the monthly AWS service cost of your overall platform considering the services in use, your accounts, and your environments. This ensures that our customers have a reasonable idea of their upcoming bill before we get started on your infrastructure.

Get in touch to find out more.

What is Foundation Cloud Infrastructure?

To start, we provision the best practice recommended foundation infrastructure in each of your accounts. This includes VPC’s, Networks, and Security Groups. We provide the Infrastructure as Code for you to maintain your foundation cloud infrastructure once provisioned.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Security Applied at all layers mean?

Whatever the architecture of your platform we ensure to secure your data in transit and at rest. We consider the classification of your data across the platform and in cases may introduce AES-256 encryption, highly restricted access, and otherwise.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Basic Single-Account IAM include?

Startups and smaller teams may start out with a single account. These teams still need to apply the Principle of least Privilege to ensure good segregation of duties within their single account. We introduce IAM Groups, Roles, and Service Roles in line with the team’s requirements.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Cross-Account Enhanced IAM include?

In a Multi-Account topology Operations, staff may want to invoke events e.g. deploy an application from the Operations account into Non-Production or Production. We introduce Cross-Account IAM Groups, Roles, and Service Roles in line with the team’s requirements. This enforces clear boundaries between accounts, users, and workloads.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Application Infrastructure include?

We provision application infrastructure so you can grow and scale to meet customer demands. This includes application runtime services and data stores. We ensure you can deploy new application changes to this infrastructure. We configure monitoring, logging, and alarms. We use a mix of ECS, Serverless, EC2 for your application infrastructure. We use a mix of RDS, DynamoDB, S3, ElasticSearch, and ElasticCache for your data stores.

Get in touch to find out more.

What does Basic Deployment Automation include?

We develop application deployment processes to deploy to one of ECS, Serverless, or EC2. ‘Basic’ essentially means that we don’t account for Blue/Green deployments and default to a regular deployment schedule which would occur during an applicable window for your business and customers.

Get in touch to find out more.

What are Blue/Green deployments?

From the AWS White-paper on Blue/Green deployments

Blue/green deployment is a technique for releasing applications by shifting traffic between two identical environments running different versions of the application. Blue/green deployments can mitigate common risks associated with deploying software, such as downtime and rollback capability.
